Greek Mythology tells various stories gods and characters like Hades and Athena. One more character that is also famous is Medusa, a well-known Gorgon who possess the power of transforming people into stones by just gazing directly upon her. Mythology tells us of her parents Phorcys and Ceto and her siblings The Hesperides, Stheno, Euryale,The Graea, Thoosa, Scylla, and Ladon. Among the most popular story about Medusa is her first transformation into a monster wherein Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, “the jealous aspiration of many suitors,” priestess in Athena’s temple, but when she was caught being raped by the “Lord of the Sea” Poseidon by Athena’s temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold. She was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. In classical antiquity the image of the head of Medusa appeared in the evil-averting device known as the Gorgoneion.
